Novel gene target shows promise for bladder cancer detection and treatment

NCI Cancer Center News

Scientists from Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center have provided evidence from preclinical experiments that a gene known as melanoma differentiation associated gene-9/syntenin (mda-9/syntenin) could be used as a therapeutic target to kill bladder cancer cells, help prevent metastasis and even be used to non-invasively diagnose the disease and monitor its progression.

Samsung Galaxy Folder flaunts its dual-screen flip design for the camera

Samsung Galaxy Folder flaunts its dualscreen flip design for the camera

Samsung may have already spoiled the Galaxy Folder's upcoming launch, but it hasn't given us a peek at a real, live device. Contributors to Clien.net's forums claim to have what we're missing, however -- they've posted a trio of photos that appear to reveal the dual-screen Android clamshell in earnest. In line with the schematics we saw earlier, the Galaxy Folder should be an evolution of the W2013 from last fall. Its most visible change is an update to Galaxy S 4-era software. Other new external elements amount to subtle tweaks, such as the gold-like side trim and a camera key that replaces the W2013's dual-SIM button. Not that we'd accuse Samsung of playing it safe with the Galaxy Folder -- in a conservative handset market, it could be daring to produce an LTE-equipped Android flip phone in the first place.

Influenza A virus infection of healthy piglets in an abattoir in Brazil: animal-human interface and risk for interspecies transmission.

Asymptomatic influenza virus infections in pigs are frequent and the lack of measures for controlling viral spread facilitates the circulation of different virus strains between pigs. The goal of this study was to demonstrate the circulation of influenza A virus strains among asymptomatic piglets in an abattoir in Brazil and discuss the potential public health impacts. Tracheal samples (n = 330) were collected from asymptomatic animals by a veterinarian that also performed visual lung tissue examinations. No slaughtered animals presented with any noticeable macroscopic signs of influenza infection following examination of lung tissues. Samples were then analysed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction that resulted in the identification of 30 (9%) influenza A positive samples. The presence of asymptomatic pig infections suggested that these animals could facilitate virus dissemination and act as a source of infection for the herd, thereby enabling the emergence of influenza outbreaks associated with significant economic losses. Furthermore, the continuous exposure of the farm and abattoir workers to the virus increases the risk for interspecies transmission. Monitoring measures of swine influenza virus infections and vaccination and monitoring of employees for influenza infection should also be considered. In addition regulatory agencies should consider the public health ramifications regarding the potential zoonotic viral transmission between humans and pigs.

John Graves dies at 92; one of Texas' most celebrated authors

Author John Graves, whose 1960 book "Goodbye to a River" and authentic depictions of rural Texas made him one of the state's most celebrated and beloved writers, has died. He was 92.

Graves died Wednesday at the home he called Hard Scrabble near Glen Rose, Texas, said W.K. "Kip" Stratton, president of the Texas Institute of Letters. Graves had been in declining health since breaking his hip several years ago.

He was best known for "Goodbye to a River," a memoir of a canoe trip down the Brazos River that chronicled nature in masterful language and used history and philosophy to capture a sense of place. It has endured as one of the most acclaimed books about Texas and was nominated for a National Book Award.

Graves also wrote "Hard Scrabble" in 1974 and "From a Limestone Ledge" in 1980. The books became known as his "Brazos Trilogy." His fans included former first lady Laura Bush, who often listed "Goodbye to a River" as one of her favorites.

Admirers of Graves often called him the Henry David Thoreau of Texas.

"His prose seemed to reflect the state of Texas and its roots," Stratton said. "It was a marvelous prose style that no one else could match."

Larry McMurtry, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist who wrote "Lonesome Dove" and "Terms of Endearment," lauded Graves' talents in a 1981 essay for the Texas Observer.

"He is popularly thought to be a kind of country explainer, when in fact he seems more interested in increasing our store of mysteries than our store of knowledge," McMurtry wrote. "He loves the obscure, indeterminate nature of rural legend and likes nothing better than to retell stories the full truth of which can never be known."

Graves was born in Fort Worth on Aug. 6, 1920. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in English from Rice University in Houston in 1942 and entered the Marine Corps. He was a first lieutenant in the Pacific during World War II and was injured by a grenade on Saipan, losing the sight in one eye. After the war, he received a master's degree in English from Columbia University in 1947.

He taught for two years at the University of Texas, then took time off to travel and explore the world. He went back to Fort Worth in early 1957 to be near his father, who was dying of cancer. In the fall of that year, he took his famous canoe trip down the Brazos. In 1958 he began teaching again, this time at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

Graves is survived by his wife, Jane, and two daughters.

Illinois university stands by professor linked to 1967 killings

By Mike Robinson

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A small Illinois university said on Friday it was standing by a long-time psychology professor recently revealed to have shot and killed his father, mother and teenage sister in Texas more than four decades ago, although he was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Millikin University, a Presbyterian school in Decatur with 2,380 students, said in a statement that the school expects James St. James, 61, to keep teaching at Millikin this fall.

The school said it "has only recently been made aware of Dr. St. James' past. Given the traumatic experiences of his childhood, Dr. St. James' efforts to rebuild his life and obtain a successful professional career have been remarkable."

St. James, originally James Wolcott, spent six years in a mental institution after the killings but emerged to start a new life, changing his name and getting master's and doctoral degrees in psychology, according to the Georgetown Advocate newspaper.

Georgetown is the Austin suburb where the killings took place in 1967. Reporters for the paper wondered what had happened to Wolcott and traced him to Millikin.

St. James could not be reached for comment Friday.

The news sent a shock wave through Decatur, with city council member Jerry J. Dawson, a former Macon County sheriff, saying that St. James should have told the school about his past before joining the faculty.

"I look at this from a law enforcement perspective, and I just have a problem with somebody who didn't disclose this information," Dawson said. "If I were a parent and my kids were going to Millikin, that's something I would want to know."

In its statement, the university said that St. James had over 27 years "taught a variety of courses at Millikin, served in various leadership roles and built a successful academic career, receiving academic awards including the 1997 Teaching Excellence and Leadership Award."

The Georgetown Advocate said St. James' father was Gordon Wolcott, chairman of the biology department of a local university. The newspaper said James Wolcott had admitted to sniffing some airplane glue on the night of August 4, 1967, and then killing his family with a .22-caliber rifle.

Where the Wild Things Are: Camping with Babies and Toddlers ...

Camping with toddlersIn the summer, campgrounds are crawling (sometimes literally) with babies, toddlers and young families. But many new parents may hesitate to head into the wild, as they wonder whether camping with a tot will be safe, enjoyable or worth the hassle.

Don?t abandon your dreams of an al fresco vacation quite yet ? camping with a baby may be easier than you think. ?Camping is easiest when they?re small and portable. You just put them in a carrier and go!? says Sandra Kimmet, a mom of three. But whether you pack your new baby and related gear in the family car for an outdoor adventure this summer, or sit it out for a few seasons, depends on your level of experience with both camping and parenting.

?New parents may not be ready to take their newborn to the grocery store, much less to the outback,? says Michelle Terry, M.D., a pediatrician with Seattle Children?s Hospital. But veteran parents, particularly those with camping experience, may have no problems executing a quick campground or backpacking getaway. Here?s how to plan a memorable camping trip with your new plus-one.

Stay Warm

Nighttime temperatures at state and national parks can dip into the 40s, even at the height of summer. Because babies lose heat more quickly than older children and adults, your little one will need some help staying cozy at night.

?Below 50 degrees, or 60 degrees in wet, windy weather, body temperature can drop if babies are wearing inadequate clothing,? says Terry. Keep babies and young toddlers warm at night with several layers of clothing (preferably fleece or wool), thick socks and a hat for sleeping. In especially chilly climes, be watchful for cool, clammy skin, which indicates that a baby needs an extra layer or two. Early symptoms of hypothermia include cold, pale, or blue-gray skin, shivering and decreased alertness.

Stay Safe

Surrounded by lush greenery and towering trees, many campsites look idyllic ? but they?re home to plenty of hazards for very young campers. Before pitching your tent, inspect the campground for sharp rocks, matches, sharp sticks, knives or garbage left by previous campers. ?Be on the lookout for potential choking hazards. Debris could easily make its way into curious hands or mouths,? advises Terry.

Watch out for plants that could irritate (hello, poison ivy) or sicken children, like St. John?s Wort, poppies or philodendron. High altitude is another concern ? don?t take babies above 2500 feet too rapidly. ?It will be cold and the baby may have trouble breathing,? says Terry.

Use a portable play yard to safely contain a little one while you start a campfire or cook dinner; keep active babies safely inside the tent at night by safety-pinning the tent zippers together. ?The bottom line is that babies and toddlers need constant supervision,? says Terry. ?Accidents happen when everyone is watching the baby and no one is watching the baby, all at the same time.?

Stay Busy

Don?t plan on hanging around the campsite; a bored toddler is bound to develop an unsafe fascination with the firepit or garbage bag. When camping with little ones, staying active keeps everyone cheerful (and ? added bonus ? helps tire kids out for bedtime). Dad Brian Mark has camped with his kids Lola, 4, and Aksel, 2, since they were babies. ?Walk them around as much as possible,? he says. ?Take kids to look for firewood, and let toddlers collect smooth rocks or bundles of sticks.?

The good news: kids under two don?t need much stimulation to stay happy. Most will be thrilled to simply wander the campground (with Mom or Dad close at hand), admiring the scenery and making friends with other campers. Comb local beaches, visit landmarks and don?t be afraid to drive to the nearest town for a meal or a cup of hot cocoa or coffee ? a camping trip with a baby is not the time to rough it, notes Terry. More adventurous families can check in with the ranger?s station for a map of local hiking trails.

Stay Happy

When camping with tots, don?t sweat the small stuff, advises Georgiann Derieg, a mom of seven. ?When we camp, I dress kids in clothes destined for the Goodwill pile so I don?t need to worry about dirt, stains or rips.?

The outcome of your trip may be determined before you leave the driveway; often, the difference between a great tip and a forgettable one is what you pack. Tricycles, baby carriers, simple toys, trash bags, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, extra diapers, flashlights and batteries are must-haves. (Derieg keeps extra flashlights around the tent and one under her pillow at night to handle middle-of-the-night parent duties.)

?Don?t forget to bring a portable play pen, a standing seat or a back carrier so that babies can check things out safely,? says Terry. And, of course, pack your fully charged camera, so decades from now you can pull out pictures that prove your child was camping before he could walk.

Goodell satisfied Browns owner handling probe

BEREA, Ohio (AP) ? NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says he's satisfied with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's handling of the federal investigation into fraud at his family-owned business, and said the league has no plans to intervene at this time.

Goodell, who was at Browns training camp Thursday to launch a youth football initiative on safety, called Haslam a "man of great integrity." Goodell says Haslam has been working hard to fix the problems at Pilot Flying J, which had its headquarters raided in April by the FBI and IRS as part of a probe into fraud at the company.

Goodell said the will continue to monitor the situation, but doesn't think "it's a matter for us at this moment."

Goodell said Haslam has been in constant contact with the league to provide updates throughout the investigation.

Samsung caught tampering with Galaxy S4 scores | Your Daily ...

In the world of computers, optimizing hardware to make it run faster in certain programs is a common practice. Over the years, almost all big hardware firms have allegedly fiddled with their products to artificially boost numbers in programs that power users and technology journalists use to test products.

Now, the practice seems to have entered the smartphone market. Samsung has been allegedly caught boosting the score of Exynos Octa processor, which is used in Galaxy S4 sold in India, to make it appear faster than the processors made by other companies.

Hardware testers at AnandTech, a website that keeps tracks of technology and computer hardware trends, have found that Galaxy S4 identifies some benchmarks and artificially boosts the speed of the processor to obtain better results.

On graphics side, whenever the phone finds GLBenchmark 2.5, a popular 3D benchmarking program, it boosts the speed of graphics chip to 533MHz. However, when a user is playing a video game the speed is limited to 480MHz.

On general processing side too, whenever a popular benchmarking program like Antutu or Quadrant is launched, the CPU speed is boosted and maintained at its maximum. This is different from real-world scenario because during the actual use the speed of the processor fluctuates on the basis of load as well as the temperature or heat inside the phone.

AnandTech found that Samsung includes several system files in Galaxy S4 that contain references to popular benchmarking apps. This means the phone identifies those benchmarking apps and creates special conditions to run them. Similar hardware capabilities are not available to consumers when they are using the device.

?You should be careful about comparing Exynos 5 Octa based Galaxy S4s using any of the affected benchmarks to other devices and drawing conclusions based on that. This seems to be purely an optimization to produce repeatable (and high) results in CPU tests, and deliver the highest possible GPU performance benchmarks,? AnandTech reported.

This is not the first instance of a company trying to fiddle with benchmarks. Recently, it was found that Antutu, a popular benchmark, was treating Intel?s Atom processors differently from processors made by companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek. Antutu was reportedly carrying out some hardware-based calculations that benefitted Intel processors.

After his dubious method became public, the developer of Antutu changed the code of his app. The new app gives almost 20% lower score for same Atom processors.

At Times Of India, we do not rely on benchmarks to test phones or tablets even though we use them to identify and estimate low-level hardware capabilities of a device.

We have reached out to Samsung and will update the story when if we get a statement.

The iPhone Blog: Netflix user profiles begin appearing on the Apple TV for some accounts

The new Netflix user profiles for shared accounts are set to be rolled out by the end of August, but according to reports the feature is already beginning to show up on the Apple TV for some. First noticed by MacRumors, those with certain shared accounts will start to see unique user profiles showing up when opening the app:

While the feature is not yet available to the general public, the infrastructure has been launched on the Apple TV. According to a Netflix customer service representative, Netflix users who previously set up profiles when using the DVD service will now see those profiles show up on the Apple TV.

The report goes on to say that profiles for the moment can't be altered, and new ones can't be created. When the feature is officially launched Netflix subscribers will all be able to create these profiles then access them on their Apple TV. Anyone seen this show up yet? How's it working for you?

Maskal, Armstrong headlines Urban Music Party awards | Malawi ...

By Nyasa Times Reporter

Two of the country?s celebrated afro-pop artists, Maskal and Armstrong have been lined up to spice up this year?s Urban Music Party (UMP) Media Awards set for Saturday 3rd August, 2013 at Nanzikambe Arts Caf? in Naperi.

Initially, the awards were expected to be given out during this year?s UMP main festival at Blantyre Culture Centre last Saturday but were deferred to this weekend after electrical problem cut cut short the event.

One of the UMP festival organizers, Ken Limwame disclosed to Nyasa Times that the awards will be given out to three media practitioners from print, radio and online as special recognition for their role in the Arts sector and enormous contribution towards the growth of urban music.

Limwame said: ?During the main festival we managed to give out the Life Time Achievers Awards to both late Vic Marley and the Black Life Entertainment. We could not proceed, however, with the event due to electrical problem, which our technicians failed to identify and rectify, and stand by generator could not help either. This is why we have decided to have a special event for the awards presentation?.

Armstong: One of the headline act

The selection of the media awardees was decided by 36 artists and 10 deejays that were nominated by the public for the UMP Festival?s Headliner voting process. Aside the awards, organizers are also set to give out medals to some of the nominated artists who missed it out during main event.

During the Nanzikambe event which will be open to the public at K500 as gate fee, the Ndamusowa star, Armstrong will share a stage with his former Nde?feyo Entertainment label mate, Maskal of Udalire and Zili ndi Iwe hits, apart from other artists.

Limwame said the media has played a pivotal role in the development of the local urban arts and culture industry, and they are influential in determining which direction it has to take.

?However their role has not been properly recognized or honoured. UMP feels by awarding selected Media practitioners for their best work will propel media excellence and in a way help develop local urban arts and culture,? said Limwame, one of the Directors for Nde?feyo Entertainment.

On UMP Festival Urban Music Party (UMP) Festival was successfully held on 27 July, 2013 at Blantyre Culture Centre (formerly French Culture Centre) with spectacle and glamour; and as organizers, we were overwhelmingly impressed with the response.

The pre-show at Chichi?s Spot Club in Chinyonga was unprecedentedly packed to the brim on Friday night and the final event as well as the after-party at Blue Elephant on Saturday night received one of the biggest crowds this year.

?And many thanks to everybody, including the sponsors, who participated in this year?s UMP Festival as well as the media, which was above the bar, working tirelessly, in ensuring that the festival was successful. After a 2 year break, we are happy that, overall, our key objectives were met. We are proud of our achievement in producing this unique festival.?

The festival was supported by Airtel Money, GOtv (Multichoice), Star Radio, Blantyre Newspapers Limited (BNL) among others. It is being organized by a team put together by Nde?feyo Entertainment and Prime Time Media.

Campaign against illegal immigrants strains coalition

By Andrew Osborn

LONDON (Reuters) - An advertising campaign designed to get illegal immigrants to leave Britain opened up a rift in the government on Monday when Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman said it was working but his coalition partner said the idea was "offensive".

The trial campaign saw two vans drive around six London boroughs in the last week displaying billboards telling illegal immigrants to "Go Home or Face Arrest", part of a wider government crackdown aimed at reducing net migration - the numerical difference between people coming in and out of the country.

Urging people to contact the authorities "for free advice, and help with travel documents", the posters carried a big picture of a pair of handcuffs and reported how many illegal immigrants had been arrested in the last week.

Voluntary immigrant returns were the "most cost-effective" way of reducing illegal migration, officials said.

Immigration is a hot button issue in Britain, where Cameron is trying to stop an exodus of voters from his ruling Conservatives to a populist anti-immigration party before a parliamentary election in two years' time.

Conservative strategists believe the campaign will be popular with many voters, but the topic is an uncomfortable one for Cameron's junior coalition partner, the left-leaning Lib Dems.

Keen to distance themselves from the Conservatives in voters' minds before the next election, they have abandoned ideas for an amnesty for illegal immigrants and now advocate a tougher approach.

But they have bridled at the ad campaign.

'STUPID AND OFFENSIVE'

Business Secretary Vince Cable, a Lib Dem, called it "stupid and offensive", saying he thought it very unlikely to be continued.

"It is designed, apparently, to sort of create a sense of fear in the British population that we have a vast problem of illegal immigration. We have a problem, but it's not a vast one," Cable told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show on Sunday.

He said the Lib Dems had not been consulted about the initiative.

But a spokesman for Cameron, who is on holiday in Portugal, said on Monday that the prime minister didn't agree with Cable's criticism. "No is the short answer," the spokesman told reporters when asked whether he agreed the campaign was "stupid and offensive".

"The pilot is already working. The pilot is about targeting people who are here illegally and giving them the opportunity to leave the country voluntarily rather than be arrested, detained and removed."

The government would review the pilot's success and examine how and whether the campaign could be continued, he added, saying there had been "a great deal of interest" from illegal immigrants in the scheme.

Cameron has ruled with the Lib Dems since 2010, but the two have taken increasingly different positions on issues such as Britain's role in Europe and on reform of Britain's unelected upper house of parliament.

Many traditional supporters of the Lib Dems felt alienated when they struck a coalition deal with the Conservatives, a centre-right party, and have been further disenchanted by what they see as the coalition's "lurch to the right" on immigration and welfare policy.

Obama proposes 'grand bargain' for jobs

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) ? President Barack Obama is offering Republicans something they've wanted for a long time, a simpler corporate tax code, in exchange for more spending on programs to create jobs for the middle class.

But Republicans are saying "no deal." They say the corporate and individual tax codes must be changed simultaneously to help certain small business owners.

Obama says money that comes from changing the tax system and closing loopholes can be spent on road and bridge-building projects to create construction jobs, or to help community colleges provide better skills training.

The president spoke at an Amazon.com warehouse in Chattanooga, Tenn., delivering his fourth speech on the economy and jobs in the past week. The online retailer said Monday it is adding 7,000 jobs in 13 states.

More than 100 teens rescued in weekend sex-trafficking raids, FBI says

By Pete Williams and Erin McClam, NBC News

More than 100 teenagers involved in sex trafficking and exploitation were rescued over the weekend in coordinated raids encompassing more than 70 cities, the FBI said Monday.

The youngest child was 13 years old, the agency said.

The raids resulted in the arrest of 150 ?pimps? involved in the commercial exploitation of both adults and children, said Ronald Hosko, assistant director of the FBI?s criminal investigative division.

It was the FBI?s largest action to date focusing on the recovery of sexually exploited children, and took law enforcement agencies to streets, motels, casinos and social media platforms, Hosko said. He said he hoped it would focus attention on sex trafficking, ?this threat that robs us of our children.?

The pimps preyed in particular on troubled children, including children from broken homes, authorities said. In some of the cases, they used a popular online classified site, Backpage, to sell the children for sex, authorities said.

?The pitches tend to be: Girls are enticed with compliments or offers, do they want to make some money,? Hosko said. ?Then they are trapped into this cycle that involves drugs, that involves physical abuse. It may involve torture.?

Criminal charges against the 150 will include human trafficking, authorities said.

An estimated 240,000 children in the United States are considered at risk of sexual exploitation.

(AP) ? Declaring child prostitution a "persistent threat" in America, the FBI said Monday that authorities had rescued 105 young people and arrested 150 alleged pimps in a three-day sweep in 76 cities.

The agency said it had been monitoring Backpage.com and other websites as a prominent online marketplace for sex for sale. Backpage.com said that it was "very, very pleased" by the raids and that if the website were shut down to the advertisements, the ads would be pushed to sites that wouldn't cooperate with law enforcement.

The young people in the roundup, almost all of them girls, ranged in age from 13 to 17.

The largest numbers of children rescued in the weekend initiative, Operation Cross Country, were in the San Francisco Bay and Detroit areas, along with Milwaukee, Denver and New Orleans. The operation was conducted under the FBI's decade-long Innocence Lost National Initiative. The latest rescues and arrests were the largest such enforcement action to date.

"Child prostitution remains a persistent threat to children across the country," Ron Hosko, assistant director of the bureau's criminal investigative division, told a news conference. "We're trying to put this spotlight on pimps and those who would exploit."

In Operation Cross Country, federal, state and local authorities cooperated in an intelligence effort aimed at identifying pimps and their young victims.

The FBI said the campaign has resulted in rescuing 2,700 children since 2003. The investigations and convictions of 1,350 individuals have led to life imprisonment for 10 pimps and the seizure of more than $3.1 million in assets.

In their efforts to identify child victims, investigators seek help wherever they can find it ? in some cases from adult prostitutes, Hosko said. He said almost all the victims in sweeps like the one over the weekend are girls and that the profiles of the victims cut across racial lines and boundaries of wealth.

Social media are a common denominator in many of the rescues.

"We are seeing it more and more, kids being put out on the street and being trafficked because of the Internet," said Detective Angela Irizarry of the Hayward Police Department not far from San Francisco. "Many of these kids come from runaway or group homes and they feel like this is the only for them to survive on the street."

She said her department identified three girls, ages 15, 16 and 17 and a woman seen dropping off two of the girls was arrested as a pimp. One of the girls was a runaway, another had been missing from a group home for several months and a third ran away off and on from her family's home, Irizarry said. The detective said she had not had a chance to speak with the girls and does not know how long they had been involved in prostitution, but that one of them "is denying any involvement of the individuals we had arrested for pimping. That is typical. Usually these girls don't immediately give up their pimps."

Irizarry said a multi-agency, cross-country effort was necessary because local police departments do not always have the resources to investigate tips about child sex trafficking.

Last year, five members of the Underground Gangster Crips contacted teens at school or through Facebook, DateHookUp.com or other online social networking sites, enticing the girls to use their looks to earn money through prostitution.

As for websites, Liz McDougall, the general counsel for Backpage.com, said that if that site were shut down to the advertisements in question, the information that can lead to the rescues would be lost to law enforcement because the ads would be pushed to "offshore uncooperative websites."

"We feel very strongly that we're doing the right thing, and we're going to continue to do the right thing and we congratulate the FBI and everybody with the task forces involved in the program," said McDougall.

In earlier sweeps, child prostitution victims have been recovered at major sporting events ? including the NCAA Final Four and Super Bowl, Hosko said.

In the 1990s, gangs took control of street prostitution across America; that forced pimps to move girls into sporting events where security existed, said Dr. Lois Lee, founder and president of Children of the Night, a nonprofit group that has rescued 10,000 children from prostitution since 1979.

Hosko said the plight of the young people often goes unreported to authorities because the children in many instances are alienated from their families and are no longer in touch.

In Oakland, Calif., police Lt. Kevin Wiley said authorities "always afraid" for the girls.

"They usually get into this because they are running away from something else," said Wiley. "You're trying to find out what brought them into this lifestyle in the first place. It goes way beyond law enforcement to solve this epidemic."

Pimps operate wherever vulnerable potential victims can be found. Some are being recruited right out of foster care facilities, Hosko said.

For the past decade, the FBI has been attacking the problem in partnership with a private group, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

John Ryan, the head of the center, called the problem "an escalating threat against America's children."

The Justice Department has estimated that nearly 450,000 children run away from home each year and that one-third of teens living on the street will be lured toward prostitution within 48 hours of leaving home.

Congress has introduced legislation that would require state law enforcement, foster care and child welfare programs to identify children lured into sex trafficking as victims of abuse and neglect eligible for protections and services.

"In much of the country today, if a girl is found in the custody of a so-called pimp she is not considered to be a victim of abuse, and that's just wrong and defies common sense," Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said during a Senate Finance Committee hearing last month. Wyden co-sponsored the legislation with Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio.

Omnicom, Publicis to combine into biggest ad firm

PARIS (AP) ? Omnicom Group Inc. and Publicis Groupe SA say they are combining in a "merger of equals" that will create the world's largest advertising firm, one worth more than $35 billion.

The combined company will be called Publicis Omnicom Group and be jointly led by Omnicom CEO John Wren and Publicis CEO Maurice Levy as co-chief executives. The move is designed to bolster the companies' focus on growing Asian and Latin American markets such as China and Brazil, where they each have ramped up operations to counter lackluster growth in weak European markets.

But although a combined firm will allow for more pricing power in general, the decrease in competition could present regulatory hurdles in the U.S. and Europe. Client conflicts also could be an issue, as rivals such as Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo, McDonald's, Yum Brands' Taco Bell, Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble now find themselves under the same umbrella.

Rich Tullo, an analyst at Albert Fried & Co. in New York, predicted pushback from regulators in both the U.S. and France. The U.S. could be wary of one company controlling such a large portion of the market, he said, while in France, authorities might not take warmly to any Americanization of a company that is a bright spot in the bruised French economy.

Tullo also questioned whether the combined company could live up to promises like the $500 million in cost savings touted with the announcement, given Europe's shaky financial condition. "That sounds like financial alchemy, if you ask me," he said.

Omnicom Group Inc., based in New York, owns BBDO Worldwide, DDB Worldwide Communications Group and TBWA Worldwide, among other agencies. Paris-based Publicis Groupe SA runs its namesake agency as well as Leo Burnett Worldwide, Saatchi & Saatchi and DigitasLBi. Their merger creates a company with combined annual revenue of about $23 billion, leapfrogging them over current London-based industry leader WPP PLC.

For the first year, Omnicom Chairman Bruce Crawford will serve as non-executive chairman of the new company. He will be succeeded by Elisabeth Badinter, the current Publicis Groupe chairwoman, and daughter of its founder, for the second year.

Levy is slated to take the non-executive chairman's seat after 30 months, leaving Wren to continue as sole CEO from that point.

Omnicom, which also owns public relations firms such as Fleishman-Hillard, Porter Novelli and Ketchum, reported 2012 profit of nearly $1 billion on revenue of $14.22 billion. Earlier this month, the Madison Avenue giant posted second-quarter earnings that topped analysts' average forecast, though revenue growth of 2 percent fell just short of expectations.

Founded in 1986, Omnicom generates just over half of its revenue from U.S. clients, and about one-quarter from European and British markets combined. The company's stock has risen 31 percent in the last 12 months, recently peaking at $67.43 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Omnicom will benefit from Publicis' strategic shift in the last few years toward digital operations, as the French company beefed up its digital marketing profile with the acquisitions of Digitas, Razorfish, Rosetta, Big Fuel and LBi. Publicis, which had revenue of $8.78 billion in 2012, had targeted generating 75 percent of its revenue in digital and fast-growing countries by 2018, according to a recent investor presentation.

The move gives Publicis, which has faced questions about who will succeed 71-year-old Levy, access to Omnicom's well-regarded senior leadership, said James Dix, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.

Analysts said the deal also represents even more consolidation in an industry that is already dominated by just a few players, a fact that might not sit well with U.S. regulators.

If the Omnicom-Publicis combination goes through, the combined company would account for nearly 40 percent of the U.S. ad industry, twice as much as the nearest competitor, WPP, according to Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group in New York.

Wieser said Sunday the deal came as a surprise to many in the industry. Omnicom, he said, has "always been viewed as too large to get any larger."

The combined company will have more than 130,000 employees.

One concern is whether Omnicom and Publicis can strike a harmonious balance of power ? something that can be difficult in mergers of similar-sized companies.

"It's not clear yet who really is in the driver's seat," Wieser said. "That will emerge over time."

The fact that the two firms are based in different countries could also become an issue, Dix said. "You have these fiefdoms that keep people from playing together. One company is based in Paris, one is in New York. Where is the power center?" he said in an interview Saturday.

Dix expects that top executives are comfortable with the structure of the deal, but the adjustment may be more difficult for the next level of executives who run the firms' units.

"Now they have to fit together into a broader organization," Dix said. "If you lose clients or have defections of senior executives then you have something that looked good on paper but didn't quite play out."

The combination has been approved by the boards of both companies, but remains subject to regulatory approval in both the U.S. and Europe, and to a vote by shareholders of both companies. The deal is structured so that the shareholders of Publicis Groupe and Omnicom, after special dividends, will each hold approximately 50 percent of the company.

Publicis Groupe shareholders will receive one new share of Publicis Omnicom Group for each Publicis Groupe share they own, together with a special dividend of 1 euro per share. Omnicom shareholders will receive 0.813 new shares of Publicis Omnicom Group for each Omnicom share they own, plus a special dividend of $2 per share. The new company intends to be listed in Paris and on the New York Stock Exchange.

The combination could have a domino effect on the industry, spurring marriages between other ad giants who might fear they can't compete otherwise, said Michael Corty, an analyst at Chicago-based Morningstar. "Within the ad agency industry, this is potentially an earthquake deal."

Brazilian Blowout Hair Straightening Product Contains Dangerous Levels Of Cancer-Causing Formaldehyde

Those sleek, pin straight locks desired by many girls might come at a higher price than many hair professionals are aware of. The Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Hair Solution, a permanent hair straightening system, was recently discovered to have cancer causing agents in the formula.

Follow us

Soon to be published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, the study shows that salon stylist and clients were being exposed to high levels of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable, strong-smelling chemical commonly used in building materials, household products, and in the embalming fluid used to preserve human corpses.

Study author Michelle Stewart, of the University of California, Berkeley, found that "formaldehyde concentrations in the air around hairstylists and customers exceeded limits set by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health," as reported by MedicineNet.com.

Formaldehyde primarily affects the upper respiratory tract. A 1980 laboratory study?conducted on rats has shown that a high exposure of formaldehyde could lead to certain cancers, including nasal cancer. Several studies cited by the American Cancer Society?have established a link between formaldehyde and cancers of the uppermost part of the throat (nasopharynx). However other studies sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and other organizations are inconclusive.

Research also points to a connection between formaldehyde exposure and leukemia. "A recent study found that workers exposed to formaldehyde had higher than normal levels of chromosome changes in early white blood cells in their bone marrow," according to the American Cancer Society. "This finding supports the possible link between formaldehyde exposure and leukemia."

Measures have been enacted to reduce workplace exposure to the carcinogen. In 1987, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandated?that workers exposed to formaldehyde must be limited to an eight-hour work day and that the limit was reduced from 3 ppm?(parts per million) to 1 ppm. Five years later, the limitations on formaldehyde exposure became more strict as the amount was further reduced to 0.75 ppm.

The Brazilian Blowout formula has a higher concentration than what is recommended. "The recommendation is that salons use products containing no more than 0.1 percent formaldehyde, but the product we investigated contained 12 percent formaldehyde," said Stewart.

The chemical hair straightening treatment helps girls with curly or wavy hair turn their tresses sleek and straight. The treatment can last up to three months and needs to be redone once the person's hair starts to grow out. Documented side effects from using the product include water eyes, runny nose, upper respiratory tract infections, and nose bleeds.

So before you make the jump to transform your Shirley Temple locks into perfectly straight, Kim Kardashian hair, you might want to weigh the risks against the benefits. Be sure to explore other straightening methods that are less chemically invasive and formaldehyde free.

Fitbit Flex or Jawbone Up: Which is the better fitness companion for ...

As the summer goes on, so does the war for the ultimate fitness accessory and iPhone companion. Both the Fibit Flex ($99.95) and the Jawbone Up?($129.99) want to help you win the battle of the bulge using your iPhone as a key weapon.

Apple has a strong interest in wearable computing, especially with how these devices fit in to the iDevice ecosystem, and both the Fitbit and Jawbone products are featured in many Apple Stores. Although Jawbone?s Up and Fitbit?s Flex are both wrist-based devices, they have some key differences that will interest body hackers. I?ve been using wearable fitness technology for over a year in my own training and evaluated how both of these gadgets work with Apple devices. Which one is best for you depends on your goals and objectives.

Fitbit Flex: It?s about the competition

    fitbitflex
I?ve been an active Fitbit user for years, migrating from the Ultra to the One and now to the Flex. What keeps me motivated is the installed base of Fitbit users also on the program. I?m constantly motivated to do more steps and keep up with the competition.

However, Fitbit users know one of the key frustrations with the device: it?s easy to forget you have it on and accidentally throw it in the wash or misplace it. Since the Flex is worn on your wrist, you are less likely to lose it. Additionally, it is water-resistant so you can wear it in the shower and do your normal activities without fear of water damage. To charge the Flex, you remove it from the wristband and place it in a USB charger.

This flexibility, pardon the pun, comes with a reduction in functionality, however. Gone from the Fitbit is a detailed display and stopwatch. While you can track your progress of steps throughout the day on the Flex with a series of five dots that indicates how close you are to the goal, you can?t know the exact number without the iPhone. Missing from the Flex is the altimeter (stair flight tracking) that both the previous Ultra and the current One track. The Flex will also track the length and quality of your sleep by detecting motion in the night. It will vibrate to wake you up.

Similar to the One, the device syncs using Bluetooth 4.0 with the iPhone 4S and above allowing users to check their progress throughout the day or in real time (I try to kick it up a notch while on the treadmill). The quick and easy sync almost makes up for the lack of display, something I suspect most users will only be slightly annoyed by in the Flex.

The Flex includes the same food diary and weight-tracker app the other Fitbit products have to keep you accountable during the day. The Fitbit data can be edited and appended via the Fitbit website so if you can?t track while away from the computer, you can add the info later. Third-party APIs offer additional features such as a more detailed food diary or an incentive program via Walgreens.

    Jawbone Up: It?s about you

    jawboneup
The Jawbone Up, after a rocky start, is a solid and effective fitness tracker. However, in spite of some unique strengths, the Up has a few notable downsides when compared with the Flex

One key difference between the Flex and the UP ?is the Up does not sync via Bluetooth thereby giving it twice the battery life of the Flex (10 days in contrast to the Flex?s five days) and works with any iOS device running iOS 5.1 or greater. Syncing is instead done via the headphone jack and not in real time: you must remove the device in order to sync. Syncing takes just a few seconds and you can?t take any calls while syncing because the headphone jack is in use.

The band is water-resistant and can be worn all day. However, the Up electronics take up the entire band and thus can be damaged easier. In contrast, the Flex?s electronics are only a small portion of the band. My first Up failed due to possible over-flexing of the band because I tried wearing it on my ankle while working out.

Similar to the Flex, the Up tracks steps (but not stairs) as well as sleep with a vibrating alarm, but the Up adds an ?optimal? wake-up window, analyzing your motion and waking you during the lighter portions of your sleep cycle rather than jarring you awake in the middle of deep sleep. Personally, I didn?t notice much of a difference here, but it?s a nice touch. The sleep function includes the ability to take a ?power nap? and be woken at the optimal time as well.

While the Jawbone Up has a team function in which you can compete with others, I couldn?t find any friends using the device to test this function; I have several dozen using the Fitbit tracker. The Up will analyze your data and give you motivational messages via the iOS app. It?s called ?Insights,? and the feature gives you suggestions based on the data it receives such as getting more sleep and compares your sleep and activities. The device will remind you to keep moving throughout the day via an optional ?idle? alert that vibrates your Up if you sit for too long. You can even tell it your mood for the day and it will factor that into the analysis. The Up app is your motivator and coach throughout your day.

    Thinkstock

    Credit: Thinkstock

The food diary is much more extensive in the Up and includes a larger database of food as well as the ability to add entries via a picture or scanning a barcode. By including so much data, the app keeps you very accountable as to what you eat.?And similar to the Fitbit, the Up includes an API that allows a variety of third-party apps to extend the functionality and data analysis of the Up.

Unlike the Fitbit, however, the data on the Up is for native mobile apps only. It can be read or modified on an iPhone, iPad or Android but not the web unless you use third-party apps via the API. This can make tracking a bit tricky if you don?t have your iPhone handy.

What are the key similarities and differences?

Both the Flex and the Up sometimes have trouble detecting motions, in particular when on a bicycle or cardio machines such as an elliptical. I had to move my arms constantly or put them in my pocket to get them to register.

Because you can remove the Flex?s electronics, that also means you can change the color of the band after purchase. The Flex wristband is adjustable, while the Up offers only small, medium and large sizes with no swapping out of colors. Both are comfortable, but I had trouble with the clasp on the Flex getting in the way while typing, though it had a flatter profile overall than the Up.

Other than these differences the devices work very similar and it?s a tough decision.

Which is best for you: Flex or Up?

If you are motivated by competition with friends, the Flex is a good choice. The app or the website lets you know how you are doing compared to your friends. Personally, I got very motivated by these comparisons ? if I saw a friend was close to reaching one of my goals (steps, miles, etc.), I might park the car further away or take the dog for a longer walk. The social element for some is a key aspect of these devices so finding others that have these devices is an important consideration.

If you are more self-motivated, the Up may be a better choice because of the more detailed food diary and trend analysis of your sleep and steps, which can be very empowering. The insights and idle alarms are designed to motivate you and replace the motivation caused by competition. The Up is also compatible with older devices such as the iPhone 4 or 3GS because it uses the headphone port, unlike the Flex which needs Bluetooth 4.0 to interface directly with your phone.

Whichever device you choose you?ll still need to do the exercise so go out and enjoy the summer and use your iPhone (or Android device) to improve your fitness. What features, if any of these, Apple might include in the iWatch or other wearable tech remains to be seen.
