PayDay Loans Online Mag For ProAdvice and Finance News ...

House Speaker John Boehner?s Plan B was rejected by members of his own party. He criticized President Barack Obama?s approach to the fiscal cliff negotiations. During his weekly GOP address, the speaker called on the president to deal honestly with the American public with regards to the deadlock. The president was currently on a family holiday vacation in Hawaii.

Most economists believe that the cut on government spending and the tax increase, which is estimated to be around $2,000 per year for an average family, will bring the nation into the second recession during President Obama?s term. Speaker Boehner said that unless the president and Congress take action, tax rates will take effect on everyone on January 1.

Boehner?s Plan B imploded when most conservatives in his own party told him that they can?t support it. Boehner?s proposal would have extended tax cuts for most Americans but would increase the tax rates on those making more than $1 million. Conservatives still described it as a tax increase that they can?t accept.

Some conservative pundits have questioned whether Boehner should continue as the House Speaker. But in Congress, no one from the Republican Party challenged the Ohio Republican openly. Boehner said that he used to run a small business and have seen how higher taxes can damage families and jobs.

Both President Obama and Boehner said they think can reach an agreement before the year ends. The president told White House reporters that members of Congress should use their Christmas break to cool off.

He also indicated that a deal was in the works towards a package that would prevent a tax increase on middle class Americans, lay the framework for further deficit reduction, and protect the unemployment benefits for two million Americans. The president and his family arrived in Hawaii Saturday for a holiday vacation.

Sunday Sound: Heard on the 'This Week' Roundtable

Below are some of the notable comments made by the Powerhouse Roundtable Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Roundtable guests included Newark Mayor Cory Booker; Americans for Tax Reform President and NRA board member Grover Norquist; political strategist and ABC News political analyst Matthew Dowd; Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan; and WashingtonPost.com columnist and Editor and Publisher of The Nation Katrina vanden Heuvel .

POWERHOUSE ROUNDTABLE

1. Noonan compares Obama to Michael Corleone from 'The Godfather' NOONAN: The president has been a little Michael Corleone towards the Republicans in the negotiations with Boehner, in that essentially he is saying when Boehner says I'll give you this, I'll give you this, I think the president is more or less saying, this is what I'll give you: nothing.

2. Vanden Heuvel calls fiscal cliff a 'manufactured media drama' VANDEN HEUVEL: We don't have a short-term deficit problem. We have a jobs and growth problem? The cliff is a manufactured media drama.

3. Noonan says everyone, including Republicans, expects a tax increase NOONAN: Everybody, Republicans included on Capitol Hill, they all know there's going to be a tax increase. They know it.

4. Dowd claims average Americans shouldn't sacrifice if taxes aren't raised on wealthy DOWD: You cannot call for a sacrifice by average Americans and say we are not going to raise taxes on the wealthy.

5. Booker recalls experience with a victim of gun violence BOOKER: I don't know if anybody here has seen somebody shot, I have. I don't know if anybody here has had to put their hand in somebody's chest and try to stop the bleeding so somebody doesn't die, I have? Most of us in America, including gun owners, agree on things that would stop the kind of carnage that's going on in cities all over America.

6. Dowd discounts argument that 'The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is good guy with a gun' DOWD: When there's a kid in the school yard with a baseball bat, we don't give everybody else baseball bats and say go to deal with it and defend yourself. What we do is we take the baseball bat away from the bad kid or the bully and then we sit down and say what can we do to make sure this doesn't happen - we've got to take the baseball bat away from the bully.

7. Norquist calls for more concealed carry permits to prevent gun violence NORQUIST: You want to drop the number of murders, you want to drop the number of rapes, you want to drop the number of armed robberies, have more people with concealed carry permits in your state? We know what works, which is allowing honest people to carry guns on themselves.

8. Noonan says many Americans own guns 'because they are afraid' NOONAN: They also have guns because they are afraid, they think their society and their culture are very frail and in trouble. They think someday they may be on their own. They want guns to protect themselves and protect their families. I think that has to be respected and not denigrated.

AP source: Swisher, Tribe reach $56M, 4-year deal

(AP) ? The Indians' pitch to bring Nick Swisher "home" worked.

Two people familiar with the negotiations said Swisher has agreed to a $56 million, four-year contract with the Indians, who used the free agent outfielder's deep Ohio connections to convince him to join the club. The people spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because Swisher must take a physical before the deal can be finalized. The Indians are expected to announce Swisher's signing after Christmas, one of the people said.

The Indians will not comment until Swisher completes his physical.

"Wow! What a crazy few weeks," Swisher said on Twitter. "Hey Cleveland! Are you ready? Because I'm coming home!"

Swisher's deal includes a $14 million option for 2017 that could become guaranteed based on plate appearances the previous year.

Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis was excited about the club's newest addition.

"Welcome to the Tribe (at)nickswisher, pumped to get ya," Kipnis tweeted.

The 32-year-old Swisher spent the last four seasons with the New York Yankees, taking advantage of the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium. A switch-hitter, Swisher hit .272 this season with 24 homers and 93 RBIs.

Swisher will fill an outfield hole for the Indians, who traded Shin-Soo Choo to Cincinnati. Swisher will play right, with recently acquired Drew Stubbs likely taking over in center with Michael Brantley shifting from center to left field.

Swisher, who was born in Columbus and played at Ohio State, visited the Indians earlier in the week. The club used Swisher's ties with the Buckeyes to convince him to join a team that won just 68 games last season following an historic collapse in August.

During his tour of Progressive Field, Swisher watched a video presentation on the stadium's giant scoreboard that featured messages from current Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer and basketball coach Thad Matta, who urged him to sign with the Indians. Later, Swisher and his wife, actress JoAnna Garcia, had lunch with former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, who was at the school when Swisher played there.

Swisher's signing is a significant win for the Indians, who have been in the market for an outfielder throughout the offseason. During the winter meetings in Nashville, Tenn., they offered Shane Victorino a $44 million, four-year contract before he agreed to a $39 million, three-year deal with Boston.

Seattle, Texas and Boston were believed to be interested in Swisher, an All-Star in 2010 who was regarded as the second-best free agent hitter this offseason behind Josh Hamilton. The Indians have been desperate to add power and Swisher, who has hit at least 22 homers in each of the past seven seasons, will bolster the middle of new manager Terry Francona's lineup.

Swisher's value may have been damaged by several poor postseasons with the Yankees. He batted .162 in the postseason for New York with seven RBIs and 38 strikeouts in 130 at-bats.

Swisher spent four seasons with Oakland and one with the Chicago White Sox before joining the Yankees.

The Indians will lose their second-round pick in next year's amateur draft as compensation for signing Swisher, and the Yankees will get an extra selection following the first round.

It's been a busy offseason for Indians general manager Chris Antonetti, who is trying to fix a team that has lost at least 93 games in three of the past four seasons.

Antonetti fired manager Manny Acta and replaced him with Francona, the former Boston manager who has spent the past few weeks meeting with his new players. Antonetti also signed free agent first baseman Mark Reynolds and was part of a three-team, nine-player deal that sent Choo to the Reds for Stubbs and brought Cleveland prized pitching prospect Trevor Bauer from Arizona.

The signing of Swisher will take some pressure of Antonetti, who has been criticized by fans for several moves in recent years.

His agreement was first reported by the New York Daily News.

Now that they've landed Swisher, the Indians are expected to focus on improving their starting pitching. The club agreed to terms with left-hander Scott Kazmir to a minor league deal this week, pending a physical. The Indians still need to add a designated hitter and there remains interest in Travis Hafner, who was limited to just 66 games last season because of injuries and remains an unsigned free agent.

Andrew Boz Bosworth Facebook Interview - Business Insider

Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, Facebook's Director of Engineering

?

At Facebook, Andrew Bosworth is just known as "Boz." With his shaved head and tattoos, he looks pretty badass.

When he's not coding new features like News Feed, a once-controversial ticker of updates that's now the core of the social network, he's serving as the hardcore drill sergeant behind the appropriately named Bootcamp,?Facebook's program to get new programmers up to speed.

But he has a generous, nurturing side, too: In his spare time, he advises entrepreneurs, like the founders of hyperlocal startup Spindle.

We got the chance to ask Boz a few questions about Facebook, Spindle, and his amazing career.

Business Insider: How do you balance advising companies with your duties at Facebook?

Boz: The way I think about this is that if I wasn't excited to put in extra effort above and beyond my schedule at Facebook then I wouldn't accept the role. I take advising really seriously and since I put Facebook first I end up being very selective about the companies I advise.

BI: How did you get connected with the guys over at Spindle? What inspired you to advise them? What do you think Spindle has that other apps don't?

Boz: When Pat was still at Microsoft, he and I worked together on the integration of?Docs.com?into Facebook Messages. That was a fun project and I was pretty impressed with him so we stayed in touch.

Later on, after he left Microsoft, he came by for lunch and we started talking about his new project. I was actually pretty skeptical that they would be able to build a relevance engine or that it was even an important thing to focus on that early on in the project. When he showed me a demo, though, I was really impressed.

I think that is a pretty serious competitive advantage for them and they were right to invest in it as early as they did. I had a few ideas about the presentation and a few possible pitfalls and we just started a dialog about it and later they asked if I would officially advise them.

Pat Kinsel, cofounder and CEO of Spindle, a company that Boz is advising.

BI: What did you learn during the early days of Facebook that you shared with Spindle so they would do things similarly or different?

Boz: The biggest challenge small organizations face is choosing what to work on. A new product is a blank canvas but with limited time and money how you choose to focus your energy is really the most important thing. I've really just tried to provide perspective to the team about what things ended up being really important in the long run for us and what things seemed important but weren't. Some of this advice won't be too surprising, like really focusing on growth and optimizing those flows. Other advice is a little more subtle like how to balance putting energy into relevance vs performance or other trade offs.

BI: You've been involved with big products like the News Feed and Facebook Messages. How are those going today, and what's the takeaway from your experiences? Have there been any specific lessons from those products that now form part of the wisdom you're sharing with Spindle?

Boz: I've been fortunate to work on a huge range of products here at Facebook and they have pretty much all grown beyond my expectations and just kept on growing. At one level I have learned a lot about actually building products; when you build and iterate on something used by so many people you start to develop a feel for design patterns and anti patterns that you can pretty readily apply to new products. On another level, I have learned a lot about the process of actually building things like how to balance speed and quality or how to prioritize features.

Facebook's News Feed

BI: You've been a key part of bringing new engineers up to speed at Facebook. When you look at the Spindle guys, are you thinking in the back of your head, "I wish these guys worked here at Facebook?"

Boz: The team seems really stellar and I've definitely been impressed with their work, but I think they are pretty happy in Boston at the moment, as they should be! One thing we think a lot about at Facebook is not just hiring great engineers but also building a platform that enables engineers across the world to create great social products. Spindle is a great example of that.?

BI: A lot of startups sign people up as advisors because they really want to recruit them onto the team. Have you discussed a larger role at Spindle?

Boz: We've never even discussed it.

BI: What's the biggest lesson you've learned working at Facebook?

Boz: I think the biggest lesson I've learned is to get excited about ideas and not implementations. Implementations always have problems and if you are too attached to what you've built, instead of the idea you were pursuing, you won't be able to see those flaws and make it better. Keeping an open mind and being self critical is really hard but it is the only way to build truly great products.?

BI: Where do you find inspiration to continue innovating in your work?

Boz: Generally speaking I think people who are successful at building products are just very mindful as they go about their day. They are more acutely aware of annoyances or desires others might reasonably ignore. If you combine that with an engineering mindset sometimes we can figure out ways to solve those problems. In those scenarios it never really feels like you are innovating, it just feels like common sense.

GLHFCasting ? Car Insurance Basics

State Farm Sacramento There are more cars and drivers hitting the road every year. This could lead to a higher possibility of a car accident. If you get in a car accident, the auto insurance you own can make a big difference in how much you have to pay. So how can you find out what insurance you need and the quantity you should purchase? Car accidents can lead to a variety of different expenses, which your car insurance can pay for based on the insurance policy you own. Every state and province requires automobile insurance by law. Deciding to drive without insurance could cause you to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle and pay the cost of all the damage for which you might be responsible. Liability: Pays for the expenses you have caused to others in a car collision, including injury and property damage. Damages from bodily injury include medical fees, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Property damage includes car repair costs and loss of property use. If you are in legal trouble, this type of insurance can pay for your legal fees. State laws typically require minimum amounts, but higher amounts can be purchased and are usually recommended. Personal Injury Protection: This type of insurance pays for hospital bills and other medical treatment for you and your passengers, regardless of who was responsible for the accident. It is mandated in some states and optional in others. State law typically sets minimum amounts. Medical Payments: This coverage is available in non-no-fault states; it pays despite who may be responsible. If this type of coverage has been purchased, the insured person will receive coverage for all types of medical and funeral costs. Collision: Damages resulting from a car accident will be paid for under this kind of car insurance. Comprehensive: This applies if your car is stolen or damaged by something other than a collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured Motorist: If you are in an accident with an uninsured driver, this type of insurance will make sure you are covered. Under-Insured Motorist: Similar to uninsured motorist protection, this kind of insurance protects you against people driving without enough insurance protection. Emergency road service, car rental, and other types of coverage can also be purchased. Your auto insurance payments varies based on the company and will depend on multiple factors, including: *Your desired coverage *Your vehicle?s make and model * Whether or not you have been in an accident * Your age, sex and marital status * Where you live Many people think they can get by without auto insurance, but it is honestly something you don?t want to live without. Review your needs, do your research , and with the support of your insurance agency, choose the option that fits you best.

Canadian economy returns to growth, advances 0.1 per cent in October

OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says the country's economy returned to growth in October, although at a sluggish pace.

The 0.1 per cent advance follows a flat reading in September and a 0.1 per cent contraction in August that had contributed to Canada's worst quarter of economic growth in over a year.

The October performance, which was in line with economist estimates, starts the fourth quarter off on a welcome positive note.

The agency says the major contributors during the month were wholesale trade, which rose 0.8 per cent from the previous month, and retail trade, which increased 0.3 per cent.

Oil and gas extraction increased by 0.4 per cent, and utilities advanced by 1.2 per cent.

But there was also continuing weakness in manufacturing, down 0.4 per cent; mining, also 0.4 per cent lower; construction, down 0.1 per cent; and real estate agents and brokers, which registered a 1.4 per cent decline.

Overall, the goods producing industries were flat in October, while the services sector gained 0.1 per cent.

From a year ago, the goods industries remained in negative territory, down 0.1 per cent, while services contributed 1.7 per cent to economic growth.

Ups and downs of biodiversity after mass extinction

Dec. 21, 2012 ? The climate after the largest mass extinction so far 252 million years ago was cool, later very warm and then cool again. Thanks to the cooler temperatures, the diversity of marine fauna ballooned, as paleontologists from the University of Zurich have reconstructed. The warmer climate, coupled with a high CO2 level in the atmosphere, initially gave rise to new, short-lived species. In the longer term, however, this climate change had an adverse effect on biodiversity and caused species to become extinct. ?

Until now, it was always assumed that it took flora and fauna a long time to recover from the vast mass extinction at the end of the Permian geological period 252 million years ago. According to the scientific consensus, complex ecological communities only began to reappear in the Middle Triassic, so 247 million years ago. Now, however, a Swiss team headed by paleontologist Hugo Bucher from the University of Zurich reveals that marine animal groups such as ammonoids and conodonts (microfossils) already peaked three or four million years earlier, namely still during the Early Triassic.

The scientists chart the temperature curves in detail in Nature Geoscience, demonstrating that the climate and the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere fluctuated greatly during the Early Triassic and what impact this had on marine biodiversity and terrestrial plants. ?

Alternate cooler and very warm phases

For their climate reconstruction, Bucher and his colleagues analyzed the composition of the oxygen isotopes in conodonts, the remains of chordates that once lived in the sea. According to the study, the climate at the beginning of the Triassic 249 million years ago was cool. This cooler phase was followed by a brief very warm climate phase. At the end of the Early Triassic, namely between 247.9 and 245.9 million years ago, cooler conditions resumed.?

Climate and carbon cycle influence biodiversity

The scientists then examined the impact of the climate on the development of flora and fauna. ?Biodiversity increased most in the cooler phases,? explains paleontologist Bucher. ?The subsequent extremely warm phase, however, led to great changes in the marine fauna and a major ecological shift in the flora.? Bucher and his team can reveal that this decline in biodiversity in the warm phases correlates with strong fluctuations in the carbon isotope composition of the atmosphere. These, in turn, were directly related to carbon dioxide gases, which stemmed from volcanic eruptions in the Siberian Large Igneous Province.?

Species emerge and die out

Through the climatic changes, conodont and ammonoid faunae were initially able to recover very quickly during the Early Triassic as unusually short-lived species emerged. However, the removal of excess CO2 by primary producers such as algae and terrestrial plants had adverse effects in the long run: The removal of these vast amounts of organic matter used up the majority of the oxygen in the water. Due to the lack of oxygen in the oceans, many marine species died out. ?Our studies reveal that greater climatic changes can lead to both the emergence and extinction of species. Thus, it is important to consider both extinction rates and the rate at which new species emerged,? says Bucher.?? ?

Bucher and his colleagues are convinced that climate changes and the emission of volcanic gases were key drivers of biotic recovery in the oceans during the Early Triassic: Cooler climate phases encourage biological diversification. Warmer climate phases and very high CO2 levels in the atmosphere, however, can have a harmful impact on biodiversity.?

Green Blog: A Biodiversity Map, Version 2.0

Tigers and pandas live in Asia, kangaroos and koalas in Australia and polar bears and snowy owls in the Arctic. The world can be divided into regions based upon the unique types of animals that live there. Or so the thinking went when Alfred Russel Wallace published the scientific world?s first global biodiversity map in 1876.

More than a century has come and gone since Wallace released this groundbreaking work, yet his map largely still serves as a cornerstone for understanding modern distributions of biodiversity. An updated version was due, a group of researchers decided.

?Wallace?s map still makes a lot of sense,? said Jean-Philippe Lessard, an ecologist at McGill University in Montreal who was formerly at the University of Copenhagen. ?We?re not inventing anything here, we?re just implementing Wallace?s vision at an age where we have tons of DNA and more information on where species are on the planet.?

As Craig Leisher noted here last month, Wallace is something of a folk hero among biologists. He simultaneously thought up the theory of evolution by natural selection alongside Charles Darwin yet also made time for clambering around collecting specimens in the most exotic spots in the world. His wanderings and studies eventually led to that first map of animal distributions across the continents.

Wallace recognized that the world is divided into so-called biogeographic regions, which today we know reflect the breakup of the continental plates roughly 200 million years ago. As the former mega-continent of Pangaea split apart, the evolutionary branches of those species cleaved off from one another. Millenniums of isolation following this divergence led to Australia?s wildly unique marsupials, for example, and Madagascar?s beloved lemurs.

Wallace recognized these differences and produced a map identifying six major global biodiversity regions. Other maps have been produced since, but for this new effort, the researchers decided to take into account not only the current distribution of vertebrates, but also how they relate genetically.

?Genetic sequencing allowed us to do things that weren?t possible before,? Dr. Lessard said. ?Looking at these evolutionary links allows us to know which parts of the world are more closely related to other parts of the world.?

With a team of 14 international colleagues, Dr. Lessard helped compile and analyze the phylogenetic relationships of 21,037 species of amphibians, birds and mammals. Whereas Wallace highlighted six major animal realms, the team identified 11, and within those realms made 20 regional distinctions. The results were published online today by the journal Science.

A few surprises turned up in their analyses. For example, new realms in Central America, East Asia and Oceana emerged. The northernmost stretches of the Canadian tundra make more sense grouped with the Palearctic realm, which encompasses Siberia, Europe and North Asia, than with North America?s Nearctic realm. ?Apparently, plant people kind of informally recognized that grouping in the past,? Dr. Lessard said. ?But for animals, I?ve never seen a map of biogeographic regions showing that connection.?

The dividing lines will soon be uploaded and freely accessible on Google Earth, and the researchers hope to add information detailing which big animal families are found in each realm and region for curious citizens or researchers to explore.

The new map is by no means definitive, however. As more animal groups are added ? reptiles, for example, or freshwater fishes ? the lines between regions and realms may shift. Although the required distribution and genetic data needed to incorporate those additions are still lacking, Dr. Lessard and his colleagues used scalable methodology to build their map, so adding more animal classes should be fairly straightforward.

The maps may also shift as the planet warms as a result of climate change. Having this baseline may help scientists understand how species distributions change in the coming decades. ?The earth will surely change, but we don?t know how it will change,? Dr. Lessard said. ?We know what biodiversity on the planet looks like now, but 50 years from now we could come back and redo the whole thing so we can quantify those changes in the future.?

Canadian experiment to track space radiation and its risks

Dec. 20, 2012 ? Space can be a potentially hazardous environment to live and work in, especially when it comes to radiation. Originating from violent storms on the Sun and galactic cosmic rays produced in distant supernovae explosions, this natural radiation can pose a serious health risk for astronauts on long-duration space missions like those on the International Space Station (ISS).

Like a protective bubble, Earth's atmosphere and magnetosphere shields life on our planet from this never-ending bombardment of high-energy particles. However, in low-Earth orbit where the International Space Station (ISS) flies, astronauts are regularly exposed to high doses of radiation, including charged particles trapped in Earth's magnetic field, as well as cosmic rays and solar radiation.

To prepare for future missions that may last for months or years, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), along with other space agencies around the world, have been stepping up research into radiation biology in recent years, recognizing that it deserves the highest priority.

During CSA astronaut Chris Hadfield's mission to the ISS, he will carry a new set of instruments into orbit to measure one of the most serious types of radiation -- caused by high-energy neutron particles -- and monitor the dose an astronaut absorbs during space flight.

What is Neutron Radiation?

Neutron radiation is considered to be one of the most severe of all types of radiation experienced in space as it can cause biological damage. It represents approximately 30% of the total exposure for those aboard the ISS. In space, neutrons are produced when charged particles collide with physical matter, such as the walls and equipment on the ISS. Just like medical X-rays, these high-energy particles can shoot through delicate body tissues, and through long-term exposure, they can damage DNA and potentially cause cataracts, bone marrow damage or even cancer.

It's all in the bubbles -- Bubbles and Radiation Trouble

Radi-N2 is Canada's second generation of neutron radiation monitoring aboard the ISS and continues on where fellow Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk and the original Radi-N experiment left off in 2009.

A collaborative effort between the CSA and Russia's RSC-Energia and State Research Center of Russia Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP) Russian Academy of Sciences, the Radi-N2 study will have Chris Hadfield and fellow crewmember Roman Romanenko measure the neutron radiation levels on the station while onboard the ISS for Expedition 34/35.

Radi-N2 uses bubble detectors produced by a Canadian company, Bubble Technology IndustriesExternal link, Opens in a new window of Chalk River, Ontario, designed to focus on detecting neutrons while ignoring other types of radiation. Bubble detectors have been used in space for more than two decades on space shuttle missions and the MIR space station, and have become popular because of their accuracy and convenience.

Eight of these finger-sized instruments are going to be placed by Hadfield and Romanenko around various ISS modules. Each detector is filled with a clear polymer gel, inside which are liquid droplets. When a neutron strikes the test tube, a droplet may be vaporized. This creates a visible gas bubble in the polymer. Each bubble, which represents neutron radiation, is then placed within an automatic reader and counted.

Radi-N2 will provide critical information for potential future human missions to the moon, asteroids and eventually Mars.

The CSA's support of radiation research will not only lead to major advancements for future human exploration of space but also in our knowledge of the health risks of radiation, such as cancer, neurological damage and degenerative tissue disease.

NASA posts YouTube video debunking Maya "Armageddon"

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Fri Dec 21, 2012 2:12am EST

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA is so sure there will be a December 22, 2012, it has already posted a YouTube video titled "Why the World Didn't End Yesterday."

Scientists say rumors on social media and the Internet of Earth's premature demise have been prompted by a misunderstanding of the ancient Maya calendar, which runs through December 21, 2012.

"It's just the end of the cycle and the beginning of the new one. It's just like on December 31, our calendar comes to an end, but a new calendar for the next year begins on January 1," Don Yeomans, head of NASA's Near-Earth Object program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a separate YouTube video.

According to the story circulating on the Internet, an enormous rogue planet called Niburu is on a collision course with Earth.

"If it were, we would have seen it long ago and it if were invisible somehow, we would have seen its effects on the neighboring planets. Thousands of astronomers who scan the night skies on a daily basis have not seen this," Yeomans said.

Still, thousands of mystics and New Age dreamers have descended on ancient Maya temples across Mexico and Central America hoping to witness the birth of a new era when the day dubbed "end of the world" dawns on Friday.

So is NASA covering up to prevent panic?

"Can you imagine thousands of astronomers keeping the same secret from the public for several years?" Yeomans said.

Initially, Niburu, also known as Planet X, was to impact in May 2003, but when that didn't happen the doomsday date was moved to coincide with the end of one of the cycles of the ancient calendar at winter solstice -- December 21, 2012.

Other celestial events that will not be happening: a planetary alignment causing a massive tidal surge or a total blackout of Earth; a reversal in Earth's rotation; an impact by a giant asteroid; a giant solar storm.

"Since the beginning of recorded time, there have been literally hundreds of thousands of predictions for the end of the world," Yeomans said. "We're still here."

Doctor's arrest highlights unrest in Dagestan

MOSCOW (AP) ? The anesthesiologist was performing surgery when masked police burst into the hospital and arrested him, still wearing his medical clothes, leaving the patient lying unconscious on the operating table. Now Marat Gunashev faces charges of helping organize an attack by Islamic militants three years ago that killed the police chief in Makhachkala, their hometown in Russia's restive Caucasus region.

His brother-in-law, fellow doctor Shamil Gasanov, was arrested in the same case, but he won't get his day in court. His decapitated body was returned to his relatives, who say they suspect police blew off his head with a grenade launcher.

Police say Gasanov was killed after opening fire on officers as they searched his apartment.

The doctors' case is part of an increasingly grim picture of violence and lawlessness in Dagestan province, the epicenter of an Islamic insurgency destabilizing Russia's North Caucasus region following two separatist wars in neighboring Chechnya. Human rights groups accuse police and security agencies of fueling the violence through extrajudicial killings, abductions and other abuses as they carry out operations aimed at squashing the insurgency.

"Stories like this are shocking, but they're not that shocking for Dagestan," said Tanya Lokshina, senior Russia researcher for Human Rights Watch.

She said people are routinely arrested, often in effect abducted by men in plainclothes or wearing unmarked uniforms. In many cases, law enforcement officials then return the body to the families, claiming the dead were insurgents killed resisting a special operation. Even if families can produce witnesses to an abduction and evidence of torture, the cases are almost never investigated, Lokshina said.

More than 225 insurgent attacks have been carried out in Dagestan this year, killing 145 and wounding 280, according to Andrei Konin, the regional head of the FSB, the security agency that is the successor to the KGB. Most of the victims were police and other officials.

There are no figures available for how many suspected militants have been killed this year in Dagestan, which has a population of less than 3 million. Throughout the North Caucasus, 194 militants have been killed and 235 more injured, according to Interior Ministry statistics.

Gunashev's lawyer said both doctors were charged in the killing of the Makhachkala police chief, who died when his car was strafed with automatic weapons in February 2010. The doctors also were accused of having treated Islamic insurgents.

Kazanfar Kurbanov, director of City Hospital No. 2, where both doctors worked, said it was possible that Gasanov had provided medical treatment that the police saw as aiding the enemy.

"A sick man doesn't have a sign saying he's a bandit," Kurbanov said. "We're doctors. Our obligation is to help people."

But he also said that Gasanov, a surgeon, had certainly operated on countless security agents wounded in the insurgency.

Both doctors come from educated, secular middle-class Muslim families, and their colleagues and relatives say they have no known connection to the insurgency.

Court documents list an anonymous woman as the sole witness in the case. Her identity and what testimony she gave could not be independently confirmed.

Law enforcement agencies have released little information about the case. Some relatives said they were afraid to speak out publicly, while fellow doctors said they had been warned not to talk to journalists. They spoke only on condition of anonymity.

On the morning of Nov. 28, Gunashev had just put a patient under anesthesia when law enforcement agents appeared in the operating room and took him away, refusing to allow him to finish the operation, the hospital director said.

Another hospital employee said the officers were in uniform but wore masks and refused to identify themselves. The employee spoke on condition of anonymity, saying the health minister of Dagestan had threatened to fire any hospital staff that spoke out in support of Gunashev or Gasanov or talked to journalists.

Gasanov, meanwhile, was preparing to operate in another part of the hospital when a group of men came in and asked to talk to him outside, according to hospital employees. Thinking they were his patients' relatives, Gasanov left the hospital with them and was promptly bundled into a Ford minivan with dark windows and no license plate, the Novoye Delo magazine reported, citing an interview with his father, Sirazhuddin Gasanov.

Dagestan's police force would say only that Gasanov was killed after opening fire on officers as they searched his apartment. The Investigative Committee, a federal body, is in charge of the case, but refused all comment. The local investigator referred questions to the regional office, which referred them to headquarters in Moscow, where a spokesman refused to comment.

Gasanov's father said he was staying at his son's apartment the evening of the arrest. He said he opened the door to find a large group of special forces agents and was taken in for questioning. After spending all night answering questions about his son's religious beliefs, Sirazhuddin Gasanov said he returned to the apartment in the morning to find blood, hair and skull fragments in the bathroom and the walls full of bullet holes, according to the Novoye Delo report.

Shamil Gasanov's body was handed over without his head, his relatives said. His father was quoted as saying the body was a bloody mess, with his son's knees and feet shot to pieces.

The father could not be located by The Associated Press. Phone calls to Gasanov's lawyer went unanswered.

Gunashev's relatives and lawyer said his apartment was searched the next evening, with armed, camouflaged agents taking up posts on every floor of the building. They said his 8-year-old daughter watched an agent rifle through her room, find nothing and shout "clear!" Then another agent pushed the girl away from her toy chest and dropped 10 matchboxes into it. When he announced the discovery of "drug-like substances" inside, the girl shouted "That's not mine, you just put that there!" said Zaur Magomedov, the lawyer for Gunashev.

Police in Russia are regularly accused of planting drugs to help bolster their cases. Gunashev has been ordered held without bail until Jan. 28.

Photo Project Tracks Climate Change On Everest

Filmmaker David Breashears has summited the world's highest peak five times. His latest project matches old photos of Mount Everest and its glaciers with new images to demonstrate how climate change is affecting the mountain. Melissa Block talks with Breashears about the GlacierWorks project.

ROBERT SIEGEL, HOST:

From NPR News, this is ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. I'm Robert Siegel.

MELISSA BLOCK, HOST:

And I'm Melissa Block.

Mount Everest is a symbol of excellence and of danger. The world's highest peak means success to mountaineers. And it's also, according to filmmaker David Breashears, a canary in the coalmine of climate change. Breashears has just returned from a trip to Nepal where he's been gathering extraordinary images of Everest's retreating glaciers.

I talked with him about one huge and majestic image taken this spring. It's posted on his GlacierWorks website. Compare earlier pictures taken decades back with this image, and you can see how the snow and ice have disappeared in the past 100 years.

DAVID BREASHEARS: It's, I think, almost 400 images taken with a 300-millimeter lens that are then stitched together. When you view them in the browser, allowing you that deep zoom capability.

BLOCK: Yeah, and it's a panoramic image. You can scan from right to left and get this amazing sweep of the Himalaya.

BREASHEARS: Yeah, it's just extraordinary and we're so excited by that image. I have myself climbed Everest five times and been to the mountain 15 times. And when I'm breathless at almost 18 or 19,000 feet recording these images, I have very little time to study the mountain and learn about it. And, of course, I can't focus my eyes as closely as that lens can.

So, as I sit there and examine that image and all its beauty and glory, I find things that I've never noticed before, especially as they relate to how climate change is affecting the mountain.

BLOCK: And we're talking about a gigapixel image. A gigapixel being...

BREASHEARS: A billion pixels. So I think this image has two or three billion pixels.

BLOCK: Well, this is what's amazing because I'm zooming in on this image and I keep zooming in closer and closer and closer. I feel like I'm practically inside the glacier itself. And you can see just incredible detail. It doesn't get blurry. It doesn't get out of the focus. You can see climbers - they look like tiny little specks but you can see their form climbing up this glacier.

BREASHEARS: Yeah, we can see climbers several miles away on the Lhotse face. Lhotse itself is over 28,000 feet high. And several thousand feet below its summit is Camp 3. And if you zoom in there, you can see not only the tents, but the little climbers - well, they're little in the picture - making their way up to camp and to the higher camp.

BLOCK: When you compare the images that you're shooting now of Mount Everest with images shot back in the '50s, as far back as the 1920s, do you also see simply just more exposed rock that the images that you're seeing from the Himalayas now? Or just that there's less white, it's more ground?

BREASHEARS: Yes, we see a lot less ice. We see a less snow cover. We see much more exposed rock in nearly all of the places we visited. In some regions in the west, a few of the glaciers are actually quite stable. But there are over 49,000 glaciers throughout the greater Himalayan region, and most of them are showing dramatic and accelerated melt rate.

BLOCK: I wonder if there is some risk in making these pictures, these images that makes the mountain seemed so approachable. You're zooming right in. It's like you're there and you almost think, you know, I could do that. I could go climb that.

BREASHEARS: You know, I often think about how the images that I've brought back from the years from Mount Everest, including the first live broadcast in 1983 to the "Everest" IMAX film and now this gigapixel imagery, I've often thought if that just makes the mountain seemed too accessible to people.

BLOCK: Yeah.

BREASHEARS: And I have realized that's the call of that mountain, the iconic presence it has in our lives, and the sense of achievement it provides people with, and the sense of kudos and the feather-in-the-cap reward you get when you return home, that that is the draw of that mountain. I can't make that mountain any more compelling than the fact that it's 29,028 feet high, the highest point on our planet. And if that isn't a calling card, I don't know what is.

BLOCK: David Breashears, thanks very much.

BREASHEARS: You're welcome. Thank you for the opportunity.

BLOCK: David Breashears is the founder of GlacierWorks, which is working to match historical photographs to show how the Himalayan landscape has changed.

Trying To Resist Holiday Temptations? 7 Tips for Abstainers and ...

Trying To Resist Holiday Temptations? 7 Tips for Abstainers and ModeratorsAh, the holidays.

Everywhere you go, you face cookies, candy, booze, and snacks and treats of every kind. While this creates a festive atmosphere, it can also lead to a lot of anxiety and/or guilt in those of us trying to resist temptation.

As you think about how to handle holiday temptations, your strategy may depend on whether you?re a moderator or an abstainer when trying to resist temptation.

You?re a moderator if you?

  • find that occasional indulgence heightens your pleasure ? and strengthens your resolve
  • get panicky at the thought of ?never? getting or doing something

You?re an abstainer if you?

  • have trouble stopping something once you?ve started
  • aren?t tempted by things that you?ve decided are off-limits
(Of course, in the case of things like nicotine and alcohol, abstention is necessary.)

I?m an abstainer, without a doubt. Like Samuel Johnson, who declined an offer of wine by saying,?Abstinence is as easy to me as temperance would be difficult,? I find it much easier to give things up altogether than to indulge in moderation.

For me, no gingerbread cookies, no problem; one cookie, I spend the rest of the day thinking about when and why I should get more cookies. It?s so, so, so much easier for me to abstain than to try to be moderate. You wouldn?t believe what I?m abstaining from these days! A lot.

If you?re a moderator, however, that strategy wouldn?t work for you. You?d probably be better off thinking, ?I can have two cookies,? and focusing on enjoying them. You can really revel in whatever it is that you?re permitting yourself, and by putting a limit on your consumption, you may find yourself enjoying it more.

So, to apply the moderator/abstainer model to yourself when facing holiday temptations, try this:

  1. Decide if you?re a moderator or an abstainer.
  2. Decide what temptation you?d like to resist, and to what degree.
  3. Don?t indulge on the fly. If you want to indulge, plan ahead. This helps you feel in control and also to decide where you?ll get the most bang for your temptation buck.
  4. As you approach your tempting situation, imagine yourself living up to your rule. Imagine yourself skipping the cookies; or imagine yourself taking just two cookies. Think about how pleased you?ll be that you stuck to your guidelines for yourself.
  5. Anticipate situations that might make it hard to stick to your rule, and have a plan to deal with it. ?If X happens, then I will do Y.?
  6. For moderators: it?s one thing to indulge on the day of a holiday or at a single meal. It?s another thing to indulge during the holiday season. It?s a holiDAY.
  7. Remember the argument of the growing heap, or as I like to call it, the ?does one coin make a person rich?? question. Of course, one cookie is no big deal.? That?s absolutely true. But be very wary of that argument.

Either strategy can help us resist temptation; as with so many aspects of the pursuit of happiness, the secret is to know yourself.

Also: it can seem friendly to urge people to break their diets, to indulge in an extra glass of wine, or to treat themselves in some way. ?I can?t believe you?re not going to try this dessert, I made it myself!? ?Just one won?t hurt!? ?This is a party,? live a little!? But the kind thing to do, in almost every situation, is to try to help people stick to their resolutions. Of course, bullying them if you think they?re over-indulging isn?t kind, either.

?How about you?
Do you recognize yourself as an abstainer or a moderator? Have you found any good strategies for coping with holiday temptation?

?

I always find a lot to think about on Seth Godin?s blog.

ST Instafit Meals | Shuichi Take Fitness: Miami's #1 Personal ...

After posting several photos on Instagram and Twitter (@shuichitake) of some healthier meal options and receiving an overwhelming positive response and feedback, I felt that compelled to create a new section of our website dedicated to these meals called ?ST Instafit Meals? (#stinstafitmeals). For each meal, I go in depth about the calorie content, how it?s prepared and what makes it healthier.

There are three main criteria to each meal:

?

  1. Quick- Each meal has to take less than 10 minutes to prepare.
  2. Convenient- everything you need from each meal should be easily found at your local grocery store.
  3. Inexpensive- each meal costs less than your typical combo meal at fast food restaurants.

Before you start experimenting with the ST Instafit Meals, it is important to know how many calories your body burns on a daily basis and how many calories you should be taking in on a daily basis. Once you have determined those two numbers you can then create a meal plan based on your daily schedule. To get started, go to the nutrition page of our website.

There are two objectives to the ST Instafit Meal series:

  1. Educate you on how to make healthier meal selections using foods that you may normally buy at the grocery store and/or substituting the foods you normally buy for similar but healthier alternatives.
  2. Get you in the habit of counting your calories and being aware of how many calories are in the different foods you eat.

Once you?ve created your customized meal plan you can then work on getting good at knowing the calorie count of different foods and monitoring how many calories all your meals have. Keeping a daily log of your meals and their calorie content can help keep you stay focused and on track with your meal planning.

Are these meals the healthiest meals out there? No. Are their better ways to eat healthier? Of course, and I encourage everyone to explore the other options out there. Unfortunately, the reality is that the amount of dieting information out there can be overwhelming and confusing while the more popular healthy meal plans are just unrealistic and/or too pricy.

The good news is eating healthier doesn?t have to be time consuming, inconvenient or expensive. ST Instafit Meals was created to show you just how easy and simple it can be to make healthier meal decisions. Combine that with the free workout videos from our Weekly Workout Program and you will be building the foundation for lifelong healthy lifestyle habits!

?

We want to hear from you! If you have a healthy meal option that you would like to share please sent it to us. Make sure that your meal meets the 3 ST Instafit Meal criteria and send us a photo as well as your Instgram username. We will post your meal on our Instagram and give you the credit!

How to Get Accurate Home Pregnancy Test Results

When you?re ready to start a family, seeing a tiny plus sign on your pregnancy test brings tears

of joy. But what if the test is wrong? When can you absolutely trust the results? For pregnancy testing answers we went to Health Testing Services, a confidential pro pregnancy testing service

for regular women.

?

Types of Pregnancy Tests
?

You?ll always choose from two major types of pregnancy tests: urine tests and blood tests.

Both look for the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which rapidly increases in

concentration during early pregnancy.

?

Urine Pregnancy Tests: Urine tests for pregnancy measure the amount of HCG present in your

?

body. They require urinating into a sample jar or onto a small sample collection stick.

?

When should you take a urine test? Because the concentration of HCG is highest when your

bladder is full in the morning, morning is the best time to get a sample. Besides that, taking

a test too early in your cycle could yield a false negative. Here?s the lowdown: Some home

pregnancy tests claim to be accurate several days before your period is even missed. However,

the best results usually come when you wait four or five days after a missed period to take the

test. (Right? Who can wait?!)

Some natural variation does occur in terms of how women?s bodies register pregnancy.

Production of HCG begins when a fertilized egg implants in your uterus. This typically takes

about six days after the egg and sperm meet, but in up to 10% of women the implantation can

take much longer.

?

Blood Pregnancy Tests: ?Blood tests are more accurate than urine tests although they also look

?

for the HCG concentration. Because blood tests indicate the precise concentration of hormone

instead of just a ?yes? or ?no,? they can help determine your due date. A test result of 25 mlU

of HCG per milliliter of blood or higher is considered a sign of pregnancy.

?

Blood samples are also taken during pregnancy to monitor hormone production. When the

expected levels of HCG are found, one aspect of a healthy pregnancy is assured.

?

Usually a woman relies on a doctor to arrange a pregnancy test. However, you can order blood

testing and urine testing online through HealthTestingServices.com. The company also provides

confidential screenings for thyroid issues, cancer, sexually transmitted diseases and more.

Their ?peace of mind? packages can help you ensure a healthy pregnancy.
